What is Wax Coating?

A Wax Coated Watercolor is a watercolor painting that is sealed with a special Cold Wax Medium. This soft wax is rubbed all over the completed painting’s surface, helping to protect exposed paintings from potentially damaging elements like moisture. If a watercolor is being framed behind glass, then a wax coat is unnecessary. However, it is highly recommended to wax a watercolor if it is to be left unprotected. Note that a Wax Coating is designed to protect a watercolor from slight moisture in the air, not from heavy amounts of water. Please still be mindful about its placement, and when handling original waxed watercolors. Avoid keeping original watercolors, framed or unframed, near any steamy areas, such as the kitchen or bathroom. Also, keep away from direct sunlight. This does not mean you must hide it in a closet, just keep it out of constantly sunny areas. Although I use very high quality paint in all my works, any watercolor left in direct sunlight for too long will eventually fade.
